Motorcyclist in Durham dies from pile-up injuries

DURHAM -- A motorcyclist has died from injuries he suffered Saturday night in a incident on Interstate 85 North nearby the Duke Street exit.

The collision happened around 11:30 p.m. when a northbound motorcycle driven by Patrick Carl Friedhoff, 23, struck the behind of a northbound Ford Expedition driven by 38-year-old Leonarde Benitez.

Friedhoff was thrown from the motorcycle and taken to Duke Hospital for treatment. Benitez and the 6 occupants of his car were not injured.

Excessive speed was a cause in the accident, according to investigators. No charges have been filed.
